What we do

Understanding

We gather and integrate scientific and local knowledge to support ecological regeneration.

CARE: Community, Awareness, Responsibility and Education

We engage the local community into becoming active custodians of the Mediterranean land and sea.

Action

We champion regenerative initiatives and mitigate harmful human impacts.

Our approach

To date, Save the Med has carried out its activities mainly in the Balearic Islands. However, our mission is of international scope, aspiring to take our impact from local to global, designing projects that are replicable and scalable in the Mediterranean region such as the plastic pollution reduction initiative, HAPI Method (please see our Initiatives section).

A key focus that underpins our activities and organisational strategy is the “Areas Under Regeneration”(AURs) in the municipalities of Andratx and Pollença in Mallorca. An AUR is a geographical area that has been damaged or degraded due to human activities.

We believe this to be an effective approach in supporting regeneration. If managed correctly, it has the potential to attain the return of biodiversity through various community-led initiatives that include, but are not limited to, conservation and regenerative practices. The selected areas of Andratx and Pollença are part of the Serra de Tramuntana Mountain range, which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO ten years ago in the category of “cultural landscape”. This classification recognises the symbiosis between natural and human factors that, over the centuries, has resulted in a monumental work that combines culture, traditions, aesthetics, spirituality and identity. It is this symbiosis that offers the potential to create community-led projects that will contribute to the return of marine and terrestrial biodiversity through tangible actions and commitment from the inhabitants of the Tramuntana.
